Miss Mapp E F Benson Books
Benson came from an odd family, His father was a respected, but controversial Anglican Archbishop. His mother dutifully produced six children, but openly preferred her female lovers. The four siblings who lived to adulthood were brilliant over-achievers, but none married or had children. Some biographers believe that all suffered from mental illness, possibly bi-polar syndrome. Perhaps this unconventional background is why Fred Benson delighted in dissecting conventional characters to reveal their weaknesses.MISS MAPP is the second in the "Lucia" series, although Lucia herself never appears. Don't let that discourage you. One of my favorite of Benson's books is PAYING GUESTS, which unfortunately is not available in a Kindle edition. This book introduces Miss Elizabeth Mapp, the Queen of the quaint sea-side town of Tilling. She has many of Lucia's qualities - ambition, snobbery, conceit, and pathological suspicion. Unlike Lucia, she's a single lady, so in addition to bulldozing her friends and neighbors, she's also trying to snare one of the local bachelors.
It's the usual cast of Benson characters - widows, spinsters, retired military officers, and clergymen with the bonus of the mysterious Mr. Wyse who's a VERY superior gentleman and reputed to be related to a countess. The residents of Tilling play bridge and golf, have tea parties, and try to use their limited incomes to produce the most impressive show. Mostly they fight and make up so that they can fight again. "Emotion is the spice of life" says the author and Tilling must be the best seasoned town in England. Its inhabitants are constantly in an uproar over their affairs and we get to go along for the ride. Others have sliced and diced the English middle class and held them up to ridicule, but nobody ever did it more entertainingly than Benson. Later in the series, Lucia will appear and (of course) she and Miss Mapp will collide like two great ocean liners, but there's plenty of fun without her.

Miss Mapp E F Benson Books Reviews
I started watching the Mapp and Lucia series on PBS. So being a voracious reader, I had to have the books! These are just charming, and I'm so glad I found this author.
E F Benson is one of the most brilliant writers in the genre of social satire. His novels in the Mapp and Lucia series are timeless, full of sparkling and brilliant wit. In Miss Mapp he created the fierce, controlling and scheming social Queen of Tilling, ruling over a cast of unforgettable and absolutely delightful characters. I have reread the book many times and am enchanted and amused each time over again.
There wasn't actually a character in this book that I liked. Everyone was self-serving and sort of nasty to varying degrees. And yet, I really enjoyed the writing. The scenes and characters were quite evocative. I just wonder... are people really that petty, horrid and self-deceiving? It's a well-crafted descent into a world I am heartily grateful to know little about in real life.
As an author, myself, I yearn to write beautiful, harmless, lighthearted satire such as E. F. Benson managed. At one time I had all the Lucia/Mapp books which aged and were toss during a stressful move when my husband fell ill. Now I will gather them all again. I think I've read every one at least three times. Nigel Hawthorne plays opposite Lucia in the DVD, which I must also acquire. So many books and so many DVD's and so little time.
The Mapp and Lucia books be E. F. Benson were my mother's favorites and my son and I have loved them, too. They are hilarious English Village pieces and you will be thrilled to discover them. There are quite a few so once you are hooked you have a lasting treat before you. Mapp and Lucia are mortal enemies and their hilarious rivalry is just so amusing. The other denizens of the village are great too. Laugh out loud in a genteel sort of way! We have read them over and over.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Miss Mapp is one of those ladies who put social status above everything else. She is incredibly engaging with all the people she meets and inserts herself in everything she thinks may be a source of news for her friends, although she doesn't consider herself to be a busy-body in any way. She peeks out her front window, which is perfectly situated to allow her to do so without being seen, every morning keeping track of who is going where and why. She especially likes to keep tabs on a gentleman who lives near her. The story is full of charming character interaction, written with wit and love...it gave me more than a few chuckles.
If you are in the mood for a wonderfully written book about a group of people living through middle-age in a small town and who are wrapped up in each other's lives by years of friendship, by all means give this book a read. You won't be disappointed.
The author perfectly captured we human's love of gossip and the need to be informed of our neighbors business at all times.
It was charmingly written and the humor and wit reminded me of Mark Twain's writings.
The action takes place in a small English village and describes the interesting and quaint folks who live there.
The characters are so beautifully described that the reader feels he knows them.
The descriptions of the cottages and gardens are especially charming.
The gist of the story is that Miss Mapp rules as the social queen bee in her little village and the machinations and plots she resorts to in order to maintain that position are nothing less than hilarious.
The plots and machinations that Mapp cooks up are funny and rarely work out the way she hopes.
This book is a curl up with a cup of tea in front of the fire and escape to a lovely and peaceful English village populated by a riot of funny folk.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys laughing out loud while reading.
